  3. Norwegian forces, he extended his authority
  4. over the Western Isles, which had been 
  5. dependent on Norway. He strengthened the
  6. power of the central Scottish government. 
  7. He died as the result of a fall from his
  8. horse, leaving his granddaughter Margaret, 
  9. the Maid of Norway, to become queen of 
  10. Scotland.

  13. father, Alexander II. He pursued a 
  14. reactionary policy, promoting Russification
  15. and persecuting the Jews. He married Dagmar
  16. (1847-1928), daughter of Christian IX of

  18. Britain, in 1866.
